World of Outlaws Late Models set to invade Smoky Mountain Speedway

Article By: Inside Dirt Racing

Fans from around the east Tennessee region will have the opportunity to watch some of the top stars from the sport of Dirt Late Model racing in high speed action at Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday evening. The World of Outlaws Late Models Series will visit the Maryville track for a race billed as the ‘Mountain Outlaw 50’ that will offer a $10,000-to-win purse.

The event looks to attract some of the biggest names in dirt racing as regular competitors from the World of Outlaws Late Models tour such as defending series champion Darrell Lanigan and three-time title holder Josh Richards will be on hand. Also expect to see current series points leader Shane Clanton, who got off to one of the hottest starts to a season in recent memory during the Georgia/Florida SpeedWeeks in February.

“It’s a really high speed place,” Richards recently said of Smoky Mountain. “I remember for the size of the track that it was really quick. It was a fun track, you could move around early in the race. I’m definitely looking forward to going back.”

Aside from those who regularly compete with the World of Outlaws, a number of other top stars in the sport have indicated that they will seek the lucrative prize money offered by Smoky Mountain. Three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion and Newport, Tenn. resident Jimmy Owens is expected to be on hand. Clint Bowyer Racing drivers Don O’Neal and Steve Francis also have the event on their schedules.

Area heroes such as Billy Ogle, Jr., Tommy Kerr, Mark Douglas and Mark Vineyard will challenge the invaders for the checkered flag on Saturday night. And among the other east Tennessee entrants will be the hottest driver in the country as Crossville’s Randy Weaver looks to extend his current winning streak to nine races in a row.World of Outlaws Late Models set to invade Smoky Mountain Speedway

The track will also stage racing in the Crate Late Model division with a feature that will pay $1,500 to the winner along with the Sportsman class that will offer a $750 first prize.

Grandstands and tier parking will open at 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon with the drivers meeting slated to take place at 7:00pm and racing action to begin shortly thereafter. Grandstand admission is $25 for adults with children 6-11 priced at $5. Adults will be admitted to the tier parking area for $30 with children 6-11 allowed in at $10. Pit passes can be purchased at $40 for adults and $15 for children.
