John Ownbey Tops Inaugural Thanksgiving Thunder Field!

(November 23, 2024) John Ownbey passed Tucker Anderson on lap 22 to take the lead and win the inaugural Thanksgiving Thunder race. Anderson won the pole for the 30-lap feature and fought off Skip Arp to get the early lead. Ownbey battled Bobby Giffin for third and eventually took the spot before the lap 10 mark of the race. Arp would have trouble before the halfway mark to move Ownbey into second. On the restart, Ownbey worked on Anderson using the outside line. Ownbey got alongside Anderson on lap 21 and completed the pass on lap 22. Giffin finished comfortably in third ahead of Hayden Ownbey and Travis Fultz. (MRM Racing Photo)

Colby Horner led flag-to-flag to get his first sportsman late model win at Smoky Mountain. Horner had to hold off Mitchell Childress as the leaders fought though slower traffic. Horner finally cleared the traffic with two laps to go to hold on for the win.

Colton Proffitt took advantage of a spin by race leader Jacob Hall to win the open wheel modified feature. Hall lead most of the race before tangling with a slower car in turn 2. Proffitt inherited the lead and held off Ace Claborn to get the win.

Tim Kilby took the early lead from Austin Atkins and never looked back in winning the street stock feature. Eric Hughes got around Atkins for second.

Layton Bennett dominated the Tennessee Mod Lite feature in a caution-free race. Bennett grabbed the lead over Jaedon McDowell on the start and was never pressured in taking the win.

Austin Maples won the front wheel drive feature. As Maples was in charge, a fierce battle for second was taking place between Taylor Gregory, Brandon Porstner, and Gregory Wyatt. Porstner took second place in the race and Wyatt followed to take third.

Cody Smith held off Jonathan Allen to win the Crown Vic feature. Smith and Allen moved past pole sitter Joseph McGill to battle among themselves for the lead. Allen remained glued to the rear bumper of Smith as the laps counted down. Smith held off one final challenge to win.
