King of the Mountain Opener Wins to McDowell, Hedgecock, & Miller

(October 16, 2020) Night one of the King of the Mountain Championship weekend started with 108 drivers in attendance in three classes. In Southern All-Stars action, Ricky Weiss took the early lead as Dale McDowell and Ashton Winger quickly got by Donald McIntosh for second. Weiss and McDowell pulled away from the rest of the field. Weiss maintained the lead after a lap 7 caution. But McDowell tracked down Weiss to begin a battle for the lead.

McDowell passed Weiss on lap 21 to take the lead. But Weiss returned the favor a lap later only to see the pass wiped out for a caution. McDowell held off Weiss in the final laps to win for the first night of the Southern All-Stars program. Weiss was credited for second and Sam Seawright came from 11th starting spot to finish third.

Forty-two crate late modes were on hand for the American Crate All-Stars portion of the Friday night program. Matt Henderson and Carder Miller were the class of the field in qualifying and carried that over into their heat race wins and into the fast car dash.

Henderson shot out to the early lead, but Miller stayed close behind. Miller grabbed the lead on lap 3. Henderson retook the lead on lap 13 as the leaders negotiated slower traffic. Jensen Ford later got passed Miller for second with Cory Hedgecock moving into fourth. Following a restart, Miller retook second and chased down Henderson. Miller got by Henderson for the lead on lap 25. Hedgecock had moved past Ford for third and then pursued Henderson for second. They battled side-by-side for a couple of laps before they made contact. Hedgecock faded and Henderson’s car was not the same and count not mount a final charge on Miller. It was Miller getting the win with Henderson hanging on for second and Ford finishing third.
